Win 11, FF 101.1.0 Dragged Desktop URL icons changed to blank
This seems to have happened a few days ago.
All of the 20 or so Desktop icons I created dragging the URL from Firefox to the desktop have no turned to the DEFAULT blank page icon.
What I have tried before:
- Ran Firefox in Safe Mode
- Deleted the ICON CACHE and rebooted so it would rebuild
- Refreshed Firefox
- Clicked on the blank icon, and dragged the URL again to the desktop. I can SEE the 'shadow' copy as having the URL image/icon in it. Get the message to REPLACE it which I do, no change, still blank.
- Clicked on the icon and then DELETED it and dragged the URL to the desktop, same thing, see and icon image in the drag, but once I release it, get the same blank page icon.
- Uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, no change, same problem
One 'oddity', and 3 of the ones I did try I did get the URL Icon on the desktop? Do not know why only those 3 which I deleted to icon before dragging. On one, I did not delete the icon but replaced the desktop one?
One last tidbit, I had a screen lockup the day before, and booting from the Lockup (required a power off and then on) this was not when it happened, it happened some time later, maybe even 2 days later?
Sounds like a corrupt file somewhere, just don't know where? SFC and DISM were run and no problems found. Ran 2 A/V and a Malware scan, nothing found?
Any suggestion?

Hi irvspa, When you double-click the shortcut you should get an Open With menu. Select Firefox and the site should open in the browser.
If the icon does not change, follow these steps -
Right-click on the shortcut and select Properties On the Shortcut tab click on Change Icon In the Look for icons in this file field paste C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe and select OK at the bottom. Select the icon that you want and click OK again. On the Properties window click OK.
Thank you for the response RobertJ,
I think you misunderstood my problem?
Icons work fine when selected. However, the icon is a Windows default blank page, the the icon associated with the website.
Maybe some screen captures would help?
In the first one, you'll see 4 icons, top row, a PDF (which I change the 'open with' to be a PC program, normally those are FireFox URL Links and would show as a PDF) on the left, then next to it, an icon for YouTube, which had been blank. On that one I deleted the blank icon, and again saved the URL to the desktop and it worked fine. Did the same for the one next to it on the right (both of these are YouTube URL's) and it picked up a FF icon? Before these 2 had YouTube icon's? On the lower row, that is a blank YouTube link, and I used the disk folder string and I CAN change it to a FF icon, but I want a YouTube like I had it before.
On the second screen capture are 2 rows of Forum links desktop icons. I tried on ALL of them either doing a REPLACE or deleting and creating new icons. 3 have the proper forum icons (first and last on the top row, last on the second row). First on the second row somehow became the FF icon? All the others remain blank icons.
In ALL cases, as I drag the URL to the desktop to create it icons, I see the correct icon image for the link, However, when I release the drag, depending if the URL link already exists on the desktop, I'd get the dialog box to either replace it or not copy it to the desktop.
I guess I could create a movie file of me doing the save of the URL if this doesn't clearly explain my problem.
Again, using Edge. it sort of works better though. Since FF is my default browser, all drags of a URL in Edge have the FF icon? So I still have some unknown problem that could even be Windows 11?
Just can't explain why a few URL drags work? I also assume it might be within FF processing as all drags with Edge seem to create the FF icon? This was NOT the case before as I had some specific icons for when I need to use Edge (banking usually) and they had the URL icons... Some of those though (Edge icons) were lost too but not all?
Very confusing?
