How to download older versions of Thunderbird safely

I had a Thunderbird crash on my laptop after trying to install a new profile into an old version of Thunderbird. Now I cannot load Thunderbird - it says Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible. So I can no longer see what version the old version was. Should I uninstall and reinstall ? At one point during the crash I was warned that the version on my laptop - probably about 5 years old - would not support this new profile. Or should I try installing a more recent version ? Or what ?
