after emptying trash folder-messages stay until I get out/back in

If I delete messages they go into my Unified trash folder. Then I "empty trash" on that folder, but the count and messages stay there until I leave the Unified trash folder and click on another one like the inbox and go BACK to the trash folder for them and their count to clear. Is there a setting I need to change?

I think it's just the screen display. If i select unified trash folder and click 'empty trash', the screen doesn't change. However, if i click any folder and then click the unified trash folder again, the messages are gone.
