Suddenly, earlier today, when I went to the National Weather Service web page for New York, and I started to type in the name of another city in the available space, what normally occurs didn't happen. Normally, as I type, let's say, the letter 'B', all the cities I've typed in prior to that will appear, and I can just click on the right one instead of continuing to type in the name. So, I immediately checked on other sites and the same sort of thing occurred. Previously typed info that had been stored on the site was no longer appearing. Furthermore, on all the sites I tested, NEW info was not being stored. When I typed in the new info, left the site and then returned, and typed the first letter, there was no response.

Needless to say, I've made no alteration in any of my Firefox settings. This happened spontaneously, as far as I know. Any help would be appreciated.

Is saving form data still enabled?

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > History: "Remember search and form history"

Cor-el, the tale has become even stranger! First, to reply to your question, yes, saving form data is still enabled.

But here's the latest development: I posted my question yesterday. As of the moment before turning off my computer yesterday the problem remained in effect. Then, when I turned my computer on today, it was as though my Firefox had had a transient ischemic attack yesterday and today had fully and spontaneously recovered. All the lost memory was regained, and again the names of 50 cities popped up at the NWS site, etc. However, without any cause, the disappearance occurred again, exactly like yesterday--a few hours into my computer day, gone was all the form memory, and also the ability to store new memory. So I restarted my computer, and you already have guessed, I'm sure--it's back, functioning normally again.

And here's another oddity. Yesterday, for the first time ever, when I went to Real Player Downloads in My Videos in My Documents, about half of my videos were missing, basically all those from the past year and a half, and the new videos that I had just downloaded (and the download was consummated without a hitch) never appeared in Real Player Downloads--you see the analogy: the disappearance of stored objects and the inability to store new ones. I went to my "My Documents search" and searched for one of the missing videos. And it appeared in the search results! When I clicked on it, it opened normally in Real Player. And then when I returned to the Real Player Downloads file, all the missing videos were back! I have no idea if this analogous event in Real Player Downloads is merely coincidental or not. If it's not coincidental but is meaningful, do you know what its import is? It requires a far more sophisticated computer mind than mine to answer that question.

So at the moment, the forms memory is operating normally, but I'm sure the pattern is unbroken and I'll shortly be faced with a recurrence. So if you can arm me with a way to proceed when it does, I'll be very grateful.

                              Very cordially,
                                   graviton 37
