after reinstall of windows xp, ff will not save userid and password

On some sites I access the userid and password will not be saved. I found a command that could be bookmarked labeled "remember password". Type in the userid and password then go to bookmarks and click remember password than back to the signin and press submit. The msg save password displays and answer yes will save. I had to reinstall windows xp and lost all passwords. I cannot find option to "remember password"
