I have 3.6.15 and have lost my bookmarks and cannot access a backup

My Firefox browser has changed its appearance and is now version 3.6.15 - did not ask for an update. Now all my bookmarks have gone and I have tried all the suggestions in 'Help'. I tried to access the backup as stated within 5 days, but cannot open the backup file.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
