On the older version of firefox at the bottom right corner of the page was a little green status bar showing the status of loading a page. Is it possible to get it back and if so how?

Yes, it is possible, with the help of the status 4 evar addon. It provides the option to do that plus many other things. Here's the link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/. After installing it, you'll want to drag the progress meter from the customize dialog to the addon bar. (As shown in the attached screenshot)
