Why do some websites display fine in IE but in Firefox I'm only getting a basic, text-only view where nothing works (including the Mozilla home page!)

Don;t know why but websites/pages that display fine in IE display as basic text-only in Firefox, including the Mozilla home page as a perfect example (if anythign shoudl display correctly in Firefox it ought to be this one!). I know it must be a settign somewhere that's preventing the web page displaying properly but I can't figure out what it could be.
