Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Check "Problematic extensions" -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions

"Safe Search" installed by AVG Free is listed there with such a problem, follow directions to remove the Link Scanner Component

Thanks for your help it was an AVG extension with this disabled firefox works great again
