Yes Adblock Plus, will block the ads but this looks like malware.
You can try Malwarebytes. http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ Or Spybot Search and Destroy spybot.info And if you dont have a antivirus you can try Avast! Free http://www.avast.com/en-us/index
You should also update Firefox as version 5 is not supported. The current version is 21. You can get the newest version here. getfirefox.com
