To change the homepage, go to options, and then go to the general tab, and you'll be able to change your home page when you see it. If you're having problems with the tabs, then you type in the address bar "about.config" and accept the warning if it's there. Then in that address bar type in "browser.newtab.url". Right click it, and then hit modify, and then there will be a box that comes up, and delete that information that's there and type in the preferred address you want to show up in the new tab.
