crashing during send message
I believe this started happening after the latest update, but I can't be sure. I've been using thunderbird email for many years and have had no issues whatsoever, but in the last month or so, often when I send a message, the application will freeze, you will see the 'sending message', then that popup will freeze(and look different), the whole application freezes, if you wait about 1 minute, it will come back and all seems well, sometimes I have to 'x' out and close the program. My platform is windows 8.1. I have tried loading with no add-ons, still same issue, reboot doesn't help and it does not happen everytime.

So it's actually not crashing.
Start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.
- Win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode
- Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
- XP http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx
Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Does the problem go away?
Because it doesn't happen every time, I can't run in safe mode until it does, but I can try again when I get a chance. As an update, I have reinstalled Thunderbird several times, complete uninstall, reinstall, and it is still doing it and seems to be getting worse. When I send a message, it pops the sending message box and says mail sent successfully, then that box freezes and a duplicate box is superimposed on top of the original, the whole application freezes, 'not responding', after several minutes, it unfreezes, the popup box goes away, and all is well.
Do you have any suggestions for me to try to resolve this? If I cannot reproduce in safe mode, then what does that mean and what to do? I see an option to post a screenshot, I will attach that next reply when it happens.
Following the advice given above to run in Windows safe mode will indicate whether the problem is due to an anti-virus or other security program. Generally, it's recommended to not allow these programs to act on mail folders.
Running in TB safe mode will indicate whether the problem is due to factors such as incompatible add-ons.
Here are two screen shots, the first is trying to delete some folders and it froze for a while which I have never seen before. The second is the send window after a send and freezing.
I have not changed any virus protection and am running with no add-ons in Thunderbird. I will try the safe mode test when time permits.
