When browsing most sites: Current tab either hangs or loads slowly. Opening a second blank tab, clicking on it, the first loads completely, almost instantly!
This concerns Firefox 29.0.1: When browsing most sites, the first or current tab either loads very slowly (spinning wheel), or hangs. By opening a second, blank tab and clicking on it, the first tab then proceeds to completely load almost instantly! Is this a common problem, and if so, is there a remedy?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Sorry, I clicked not helpful by accident! Yes, your suggestions were very helpful. :) AVG 2014 is the culprit; temporarily disabling it made a HUGE difference in how Firefox acts. This was first discovered (by your suggestion) by rebooting Windows XP into Safe Mode, where most of AVG is disabled. Normal boot back into Windows, then temporarily disabling AVG did the trick. I'll be looking for anti-virus that less taxing on my older system. Suggestions????
Thanks a million for the assistance.
