I am in the habit of using Microsoft outlook. In outlook, we use 'close' button at top right corner of a mail to close that mail. In thunderbird, this 'x' is available on the top somewhere in the middle.

For closing a mail, I click on the top right corner by mistake and exit the thunderbird (which I did not want) by mistake.

As far as I can see there is no easy way to accomplish this. however an easy possible solution is to have Thunderbird minimize to the system tray on hitting the close button instead of closing. The "Minimize On Start and Close" add-on for Thunderbird accomplishes this and to close all you need to do is right click on the icon in the task bar and click close to actually close it. I hope that helps.
