I tried to upgrade from Firefox 28 many times but I keep getting the same problem with the search engines, today it was with Firefox 40.0.3 [for mac].

Basically, when I try to switch the search engine at the top of the browser the display shows me the icon of the new one, but the search results are stuck on a single site [Wiki US] that is not even the default search engine [google]. I tried to switch to several engines and the display shows them but the search results keep coming from wiki US.

I didn't find any other person talking about this problem so I guess there must be some conflict with my settings/plugins/preferences or something. I tried to upgrade to 34 and 40 but they both had the same problem. since I search several sites all the time, I'm stuck with Firefox 28 that thankfully does what it's told, but I'd like to upgrade.

Try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default built-in search engines that come with Firefox and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
