We are replacing/upgrading from a Windows Vista to Window 10 machine.

I exported the address book in CSV format to an excel file and saved it on a thumb drive.

When I try and import the address book to Thunderbird the names/emails/columns are pretty messed up. Can you explain to me what the "1st record" screen is about. I don't understand the whole move up/move down instructions. If I try and compose an email now the zip code is attached to the email address and the email won't send.

Any explanations would be appreciated. Thanks!

You need to open the csv file in Excel and organize the columns so they match the structure of the TB address book. The columns should be named as described here:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_address_list_from_text_file

You may only need the first 10 or so columns, and if there are no entries for one, e.g. Nickname, leave the column blank. Then, when you import to TB, it should be easy to line up the imported records with the TB address book fields.
