The other day I noticed when I went to enter a username, my password field was blank. I checked my saved passwords and saw that it was there, and just manually typed it in (usually it would all automatically be entered, or if I typed my username and clicked tab it would enter the password).

Today, I went to log onto Amazon, and again nothing appeared when I wrote my username and clicked tab. Went to check saved passwords, and ALL ARE GONE. There is nothing on the list.

My bookmarks are still here like normal. My browser is set to remember all history. It's still remembering everything I've entered in fields before (other user names, searches, etc).

This is a huge blow, I had a very long list of passwords for all sorts of sites. On some I have multiple accounts and now I have no way of remembering those usernames. I've searched Google and tried everything I've found with no result.

Update: logins.json.corrupt file found, changed at 2:50PM today, which is right when my computer was accidentally shut off when my plug came out.

Guess I'm done for?

I lost my passwords last month. But my FEBE add-on restored them.

Is it possible you changed profiles, or did a refresh on Firefox?

Do you have any backups, or old profile folders?

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

I don't know what FEBE is.

I don't know how to change profiles or do a refresh on Firefox, so I don't think I did those.

I have no old profiles, I checked earlier when someone said it answered their problem on another question.

I did have most of my usernames/passwords recorded on paper (a little out of date), but I just had a house fire and lost them all. So that doesn't really do me any good.

Do you still see name and password records in the logins.json file?

You can try these commands in the Browser Console:

Services.logins.getAllLogins().length => Prints number of decryptable logins only
Services.logins.countLogins("", "", "") => Prints number of all logins including non-decryptable logins

Toggle devtools.chrome.enabled to true on the about:config page to enable the command line in the Browser Console.

The only info in the new JSON (noncorrupted file) are the five saved passwords I just put in again. It did not exist until I saved the first password again.

The other JSON file is corrupted and 23KB, and is totally blank when I open it with Notepad.

Using those commands, I just found the five new passwords I entered after all disappeared.

Thank you for all your time! I think they're long gone, I just wish I knew why they all disappeared when my computer got shut down (it's been unplugged before without this result).

A bad shut down may cause no damage, or corrupt many files.

Side note: Go to your local department / electronics store and look around for an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) that is useful for you. The lowest price is $50 + -. There are also units on the market that plug in to the computer. And if the battery gets low, will shut down the computer to protect it.

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

Thank you for your links! I will check those out so this doesn't happen again.

I need to look into one of the backups for the laptop, today's shutdown happened when switching from battery to wired, and I set the computer down a little too far on the table and the wire popped out.
