I have only just found how to send an email from Thunderbird at a scheduled future time - using the Send Later option. To do that both Windows and Thunderbird must be running at the scheduled time. But want to send it overnight to arrive as soon as the recipient is expected to be awake - i.e. at a time when my PC is not yet connected. Is there some "parking site" I can send it to for later sending in those circumstances?

If you have a gmail account, messages can be sent at a scheduled time, but only from the gmail website. Other mail services may offer the same thing.

I do have a Gmail account, so that will suit me nicely. Thanks

I want to come back on this since I have a similar question, but I want to know if the following scenario is possible:

  • I have a GMail account
  • I create an e-mail in Thunderbird on my PC and use the "Send Later" feature in Thunderbird
  • Thunderbird sends it to GMail with a special header "x-send-later-at" (or whatever the syntax is)
  • GMail pics up the e-mail and detects it's a "send later" email by analysing the special header
  • GMail stores it in the "send later" box somewhere @ its side
  • I switch off my computer
  • GMail sends it at the time specified

Not sure if that's possible for the moment? Would be ideal for me...

The Send Later function places the message in the Outbox - there is no communication with the mail server until File/Send Unsent Messages is selected. It would be nice if this process were integrated with Gmail's scheduled send, but I'm not aware of any existing or planned way to do it. Perhaps it's worth asking the author of Send Later.

As I indicated in my first reply, I took sfhowes' initial advice and bypassed Thunderbird to send directly from Gmail. It does provide a send-at-a-specified-time function that is no more trouble than TB's equivalent AND does actually send it as requested, whether the sender is or is not logged in to Windows and/or Thunderbird.

Since Thunderbird is only a client app, every Thunderbird user must have a Gmail or equivalent direct provider through which TB logs in. So for Gmail account-holders it is just as easy to send/receive/read emails by logging in to Gmail directly.

To my mind, the main advantage of having a TB account is to be able to file 'messages locally. On the odd occasion that I wish to use Gmail's extra facilities, I can always send a CC to myself for filing purposes!
