When I click on the Thunderbird mail icon in my tool bar Thunderbird mail opens and I also get a brief preview page showing me the new messages in each of my email accounts. This may be a good idea for some, but I do not want or need the preview. F8 is not the remedy. How do you turn off this unwanted feature?

I am not clear on your message. If you have 'show an alert' set under settings>general, a list of new messages does appear on startup. If that is the issue, just untick that box.
