Firefox 3.6.12 slow and hangs. I need to fix or trash Firefox, so how to fix?

Firefox gets very slow. I can set the same operation in MS Explorer, and Firefox looses 100% of the time.

There was once a posting about the "FIX" in an earlier version made to fix this known issue, but the UPGRADES cancel this adjustment of disabling the memory hogging operations.

This adjustment made the FIREFOX system run with great speed.

I cannot find it again , but should not have to.

I have same problem. Firefox get a lot of resources and it gives nothing in exchange.

Update to Group: I went and checked my "Add-Ons" and updated JAVA and Macromedia. This has restored much of the speed. Still more to go.

Path= Tools>Add-Ons > "Check for updates" button 

 Still seems to slow a bit when >4 tabs are open, but not as bad as before. Going forward this should become an AUTOMATIC UPDATE prompt from FIREFOX.
