I am not able to download/install Firefox. After choosing "run", it comes up with the window asking which application I want to use to open it.

I am trying to download Firefox and after choosing 'run', and that completes, the window pops up asking which application I want to use to open it. I never get the Firefox set-up steps. We just had to remove a virus that may be linked to Internet Explorer, could that have anything to do with it?

Save the Firefox setup file to disc, then double-click that file to start the installation.

I just tried what you suggested above and when I double-click on the set-up file that I saved to the disk, I get the same pop-up saying: " Choose the program you want to use to open this file".

Hmm, does the file have the .exe extension?

more options

I don't see an extension on the file name. The name says: "Firefox Setup 5.0" 13MB (there's also one with Firefox Setup 3.6.13 -- 8.3MB)

the "type" says "Application"

hope that helps.

Do you use Windows XP?

more options

yes. I was just looking around the computer and noticed that my "program files" were "hidden", if I click on "show files", do you think that will solve the issue? Is it ok to do the 'show files', even though it suggests its not safe to do so?

That's just to prevent someone who has no idea what they are doing from accessing system files and wrecking Windows. Go into Tools>Folder Options>View and make sure "Hide file extensions for known file types" is not checked. Then redownload and tell me what the file name is.

OK, I unchecked the "hide file extensions for known file types". I started a new download process off the internet; the file name is: "Firefox Set up 5.0.exe". the "From" name changed each time I hit cancel and then download again- is that normal? Here's what they were: "3347-mozilla.voxcdn.com" "ftp.jaist.ac.jp" "mozilla-crowdcache2.3crowd.com" I tried to finish the downloading process with the first 'from' name (by hitting 'run'), then I hit 'run' again at the next prompt, then it asked me again "Open With" ...chooose what program you want to open the file with.

I believe I had Firefox on this computer before, but then I had the virus issues, and now when I look under my "Programs", Mozilla is there, but it says "empty". I'm not sure what's going on....

Alright, the changing from names are just "mirrors" multiple sites that host the Firefox files to reduce server strain here. It's a common thing with open source projects. Does the Open with dialog give any recommended programs?
