When I attempt to start Firefox, I get an erroro message that says "Firefox is already running. You must close it...When I go to Task Manager, I find that it is not running. I uninstalled and re-installed, but the same thng happens.

I have received this message before, and used Task Manager to close the process. Then it would start OK.

Is plugin-container.exe listed in task manager? Did you try restarting your computer?

I tried ti repair Windows, to no avail. However, when I restored the computer to an earlier date, Firefox returned, running properly.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
