Can't connect to internet using ethernet (hardwire) connection. Wireless connection good.

I have a good wireless internet connection. I used to be able to connect to the internet using just an ethernet connection (for faster speed and to stay connected when my wireless intermittently dropped off), but I appear to have done "something" to cause my laptop to lose this ethernet connection that had worked well for two years. I'm not too savvy with computer lingo, so please talk to me like I'm 5.

Thanks for any assistance. Cliff

Does this problem affect other programs, such as Internet Explorer, as well as Firefox?

If it's a Firefox-only problem, could you check your connection setting? You probably want to set it to No proxy or Use system proxy settings here:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button

If it's a general problem, you might need to actually disable your wireless connection. How to do this varies, for example, if you are having Windows manage your wireless connection versus using the Intel software.

Or if you have a laptop with a hardware switch for wi-fi (e.g., Thinkpad sliding switch, HP soft button) you can use that, which probably is faster.
