Why does Firefox , Thunderbird ignore my english US settings ?

Even tho I have english US as my default language, in word processing windows, and emails my spell check continues to show english british red underlining. I checked my settings, it does show english US. OS: Linux Mint 17

Please install the "English (US)" dictionary from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/
