I just installed a Thunderbird and now my message queues will not display. It only shows the Thunderbird Mail main screen in each of the queues.

Since I installed the update, each of my mail queues only displays the "Thunderbird Mail option screen with the headings "Email" with the "read messages" and Write a new message" options; "Accounts" with the "View Settings for this account" and "create a new account" options; and "Advanced Features" with "search messages" and "Manage message filters" options. I cannot display the message queues, although I can see from the queue "properties" that they are still there. The program will not respond if I select any of these commands.

The start/shift option worked and -- in safe mode -- it will now display my message queues. Calendar wasn't the culprit as I didn't have it installed. Thanks for your help.

While the problem was present, I was unable to compose new messages and a few other menu options would not respond.

The version of Thunderbird that I'm running is 38.6.0. I can't find a date for the update, but I assume that it was between 2/24 and 2/28 because the problem appeared yesterday right after I ok'ed and installed the update notification that appeared, and after I hadn't used the computer for a few days when I was out of town. Now, I assume that my next steps are to activate the add-ons one at a time and see which one recreates the problem. In the meantime, I can get by just fine in the safe mode. I'd welcome any suggestions as to how to proceed.

You could try restarting Thunderbird with add-ons disabled

The "Add-Ons" tab will not respond either.

Close Thunderbird.

You can restart it whilst holding down the shift key; this should make it start in its safe mode. Or you may have a Start Menu item for safe mode.

Or as a last resort, copy an existing shortcut/link to somewhere such as your Desktop. Right-click, select "Properties" and edit the target line to look like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -safe-mode
Yours may differ in the first part within quotes; the important change is to add
 -safe-mode
to the end. Note the space before the dash.

It's possible that Lightning (the calendar add-on) is part of your troubles. Clicking on this new shortcut should start Thunderbird in safe mode, which significantly means it runs without any add-ons.
