For the 2nd time Firefox has so kindly deleted my history and Bookmarks. I can't remember how I got them back again (I only got Bookmarks back. Thanks Firefox *sarcasm*)

Can someone help me get both back this time?

I'm using a Mac, on El Capitan.

Firefox keeps backups for the bookmarks that are restored automatically when the places.sqlite database is missing or corrupted. For the history there is no such a backup and you need a backup copy of places.sqlite to restore the history.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

FireFox 48.0.1 on a PC with Windows 8.1. I've recently lost my Mozilla bookmark folders If I do a show all bookmarks all I get a page with maybe half my folders in a narrow column on the left hand side but nothing i the larger central portion. If I select bookmarks menu I get a bunch of individual (no folders) bookmarks in the central area but they appear to be disorganized and scattered. If I select a folder in the left hand column it will open and display it's contents in the central area

I tried the bookmark/show all bookmarks/backup and import/restore / and I tried several different dates in those offered/fix. Nothing changed.

I'm technically challenged but I can follow instructions as long as when it says "click on * "that there's a * to click on.

It seems like several years ago I lost bookmarks after a FireFox update and I was directed to find the JSON(?) backup file and rename to an HTML(?) file. Is this a valid fix? If so what are the exact instructions?

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.
