Cannot open attachment after TB install on new macbook pro 2017

I am using TB 52.5.2 Since I have installed it on a new macbook pro 2017, attachments do not open any more if I click on them like before. I can save them in, for example Downloads, and from there open them, but not directly from the email any more. I tried all the tricks and tips I could find on internet but no solution so far. Any help?

do you have a helper application installed and associated with the file type so Thunderbird can "open" it. For example word or DOC files.
