Hi mendaholmes, sorry to hear about this problem. Your Firefox reported itself as version 54. Do you think that's accurate -- the current version is 60 -- or did you do a system restore (not recommended) or roll back to an older version?
Firefox's bookmark backups aren't meant to be opened directly, but there is a Restore feature in the Library window. Could you try the steps in this article and see whether they work for you:
