Try this method.

Update Java: your ver. 1.6.0.18; current ver. 1.6.0.20 (important security update 04-15-2010) (Firefox 3.6 and above requires Java 1.6.0.10 and above; see: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Java-related+issues#Java_does_not_work_in_Firefox_3_6) (Windows users: Do the manual update; very easy.) See: Updating Java Do the update with Firefox closed.

You can try updating Java from within the Java Control Panel (on Windows XP, click "Start -> Control Panel -> Java -> "Update" tab -> Update Now" - see attached screenshot).

For more information, see: Use the Java plugin to view interactive content on websites and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#On_Windows

If you still have problems, download the Offline installer available here: http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp Instructions here: http://java.com/en/download/help/windows_offline_download.xml

I always download the full offline Java installer and uninstall the current Java version before installing that new version. That is much faster on my computer. Usually installing only takes a few seconds and updating can take minutes (a very long time).

If you have a problem with downloading the full Java installer then try to disable your anti-virus software during the download and installation. See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_save_or_download_files

This is Barb, (original question) I thank all the folks who helped.

- Here is what worked for me -

1. go to www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp 2. choose windows xp OFFLINE installer 3. designate a new file as destination 4. download to that file 5. close all applications including browsers 6. disconnect from internet 7. go to saved new file 8. double click on file and begin installation (I did not need to disable any security programs, in fact I got window saying "scanned and is safe", also it was speedy 9. close, log off, log on, connect to internet 10. go to same java site as above 11. under windows xp offline, click on "instructions" 12. go to bottom of page, click on "test applet" all is well! thanks, again.
