I contacted my bank and was told that it was a browser issue. Their system does support Firefox, but they suggested I try internet explorer (IE). IE did not show the black diamonds with question marks marks. When I called up the last 2 weeks of account history, each entry was followed by this symbol. The question mark makes me question the validity of the entry.

Which encoding is used on those pages?

  • View > Character Encoding
  • Firefox > Web Developer > Character Encoding

You can get that if Unicode (UTF-8) is selected on pages that require an 8 bit encoding like Western (ISSO-8859-1) or Windows-1252
