Try a file recovery program like Recuva.

http://www.piriform.com/recuva

places.sqlite or one of the bookmarksbackup.json files is what to look for.

Did you remove the JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder as well?

It is better to try to recover a JSON backup because that is a text file and can easily be checked if the recovery succeeded.
