I opened up Firefox, and suddenly my bookmark icon on the right side of the screen that opens up the drop down menu is gone. I keep trying to add it back by going to View>Toolbars>Customize. It appears while in the Customize screen, but once I click done, and the Customize window closes, the icon disappears again. How do I add it back and get it to stay once I click done?

Just to clarify what cor-el was saying earlier, if the classic menu bar with the Bookmarks menu is displayed, then the toolbar button which does the same thing becomes hidden. Prior to Firefox 23, it only hid when it was on the Navigation Toolbar, but now it seems to hide regardless of which toolbar it's on.

If you switch from the classic menu bar to the compact two-column menu (orange Firefox button), then the toolbar button for the Bookmarks menu unhides itself. But then when you want the full menu bar you have to tap the Alt key or press F10.

Delete a possible corrupt localstore.rdf file.

  1. Firefox button/Help => Troubleshooting information, open directory
  2. Close firefox and delete localstore.rdf

You only see that button if the menu bar is hidden.

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the menu bar)

Will this delete all my bookmarks? I've done it before - saving my bookmarks and importing them back, but it was kinda a pain. Maybe I'll try this . . .

See, that's the thing. I never have my menu hidden, and I always have that drop down bookmark icon up there. So this is not true.

Deleting localstore.rdf resets the toolbar layout only and reconfigures some buttons, make sure you close firefox when you delete the file.

Okay, thanks. I'm trying to find the correct place to delete the localstore.rdf file from. In my Profiles folder, there's a .default folder and a .Troubleshoot Profile folder. There's a localstore.rdf in each of those folders. Which one do I delete?

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

I deleted the .rdf, but it did not solve it. I'm frustrated by seeing similar questions to mine, and the same answer over and over about how I can either have the drop down bookmarks on the classic menu displayed or have it displayed on the toolbar menu but not both. I HAD BOTH of them displayed. I've ALWAYS had both of them displayed. That's what my issue is - I opened up Firefox, and suddenly it disappeared from the toolbar menu, and I can't seem to get it back.

And I actually had this problem happen before, and I somehow fixed it, but I can't remember how, and I can't find the answer anywhere again. I wish I had a screenshot to prove it.

I must have missed something because I didn't have much luck with any of the above solutions. I'm running Firefox 23 on Linux Mint 14. The Bookmark icon would disappear when I closed the the customize menu. Disabling the "Menu Bar" fixed the problem for me plus it gave me a 1/4 inch (approx) of extra display space. It may or may not work for windows or mac.
