got notice that Firefox was outdated, forced to download "Updater_Setup". manually check firefox for updates, was told I was current with 26.0

This was a message that opened a new tab with a warning message, that my browser version was out of date and needed to be fixed immediately.

these links were in my browser history.... file:///C:/Users/Hamilton/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/1c1c3710.default/extensions/%7B3bbd3c14-4c16-4989-8366-95bc9179779d%7D/chrome/CT3201318/content//tb/backstage.html

Since manual checking of firefox says I am running 26.o and that this is up to date... Is this spam, or a virus/trojan attack ? is the file real or bogus?

Thanks, Brian

You should download such an updater file as this is likely causing you to get infected.
Only download and update Firefox via the official Mozilla servers or use Help > About to check for updates.
If you have run this file then you should be safe.
If you have started this file then you should do a check for malware.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Whenever you get a message / popup that software / files need to be updated,

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE PROVIDED LINKS.

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Any time you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the web site of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to Mozilla.org or Firefox In Any Language.
