I have a linux version of firefox. When I open a second new window for the first time in a session, one of my extensions opens a tab along with a new tab. Is there a way to stop that. I checked the new tab setting and about:config and found nothing. I also checked the folder where firefox stores profile information and did a terminal search to reveal all files that have the url of the extension's webpage.

The search returned hits in the following files

addons.json addons.sqlite extensions.json extensions.sqlite places.sqlite sessionstore-backups/previous.js sessionstore-backups/upgrade.js-20150714173344 sessionstore-backups/recovery.js sessionstore-backups/recovery.bak

Any guidance on where I need to poke around?

Do you know which extension is involved?

You shouldn't have any problem by starting Firefox in Safe Mode if the problem is really due to an extension. Have a look at this support article to start Firefox in Safe Mode or to detect the bad extension.

Maybe the extension set the new tab URL with the targeted URL when Firefox starts, and once the first new tab is open, the extension set again the new tab URL with the default value this time.
