always open typed address in new tab

when I type a url address in the existing tab address bar, the new address should open in a new tab. This way I don't need to first open a New Tab & type in the address there. This great feature is available in Avant Browser & thats why I have been using that browser since ages.

I don't know of an add-on for this.

The methods I know about to load the URL in a new tab are to use either:

  • Alt+Enter instead of a plain Enter
  • Ctrl+click the arrow instead of a plain click

As a keyboard oriented person, I generally use the first one. It also works in the Search bar.

Is this something Firefox did, but not now? When entering an address in a tab / window, that tab / window opens the address. The search bar can be set to open a new tab. Bookmarks can be opened in a new tab or window.

Suppose I have opened google.com in the window. Now I type in the url address (say amazon.in) in the address bar, in place of google.com, the amazon site opens in the same window replacing Google. Thats what I don't want to do. I need the Amazon site to open in a new window / tab and let the Google site window /tab open as it is.

Thanks jscher2000. Am also a keyboard oriented user and so will use Alt+Enter till I find an add-on. This meets my requirement. I was accustomed to using only "Enter" in Avant Browser (rarely used by people). Will get used to "Alt+Enter" also. Thanks again

This definitely worked previously without having to hit Alt-Enter. Why did this change? I should be able to set the browser to open a new tab whenever I type a URL into the Location.

I thought "Tabs Mix Plus" was doing that for me, but it's having issues with FF 40.0 so maybe that's the problem.

I would normally suggest Tabs Mix Plus but the current version (even the new dev head version) are not working properly with FF 40.0.

Hi ccshannon, the new version of Tab Mix Plus (0.4.1.9) is pending approval by the Add-ons site. If you want to install it immediately, you can use the "versions" page:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/versions/

Hopefully that resolves all compatibility issues with Firefox 40.

Haha, thanks, jscher2000, you just hooked me up on another thread. I owe you dinner or something.

I did try that version but was still having the issue from above, which is why I am still unsure if that functionality was provided by Tab Mix Plus or from FF itself. I'll give it another spin. Much appreciated! :)

Ah, figured it out and this should help anyone looking for this.

Yes, it IS Tab Mix Plus that provides this. If you're on 40.0 like me, see the link jscher2000 provides to the latest dev version. Install it.

In your TMP settings, go to the Events tab.

There is a section of checkboxes that will open a new tab if you type or click certain components in FF: Location bar, Search bar, History, Bookmarks. I enabled all of them and now I get new tabs when I type into Location bar, as well as others! Cheers!
