In recent thunderbird, I seem to be unable to zoom in or change font size until I open a message. The menu is simply turned off! How do I fix this?
I am unable to control the font size in the main display which lists all the messages. zoom button is inoperative, in the view menu. Once I have opened a message, then zoom is active and I can enlarge fonts.
Setting the font size in options has no effect.
I have been noticing this in the recent versions of thunderbird. It was not an issue before. The browsers like firefox and chrome do let me enlarge the display with ctrl++ but not thunderbird. Please help.

Ctrl++ allows the enlargement of content . You will fine it does not affect the parts of the program that would be consdered "part of the program. In the case of Thunderbird it works only on message display.
Try this add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/theme-font-size-changer/

It worked but not as suggested. The message did give me the name of the correct addon, but the suggested menu actions were nowhere found in thunderbird. I ended up search for the add-on by name and then got it installed and working. Thanks for the help. I can now see better!!
