Changing from Windows 7 to Windows 10
I keep getting the message upgrade to Windows 10. I have Windows 7 currently and I would like to know, just what I will get when if I change? Will my computer run better, less problems and hangups? If my browser really doesn't give any better performance if I were to change, why change? Also, how much will my browser, Firefox change from what it currently does? Being I'm not a computer wizard, I'm concerned about having to learn how to navigate my browser all over again. Is this a concern? Hopefully someone can help, and explain just what I can expect if I were to make the change. Thank you.

Many have reported problems using Win 10. Be careful.
Can you be specific about what kind of problems they are?

You can also use a search engine.
FredMcD,
Thank you for your reply. But, what do you suggest with the issues that are being presented when "upgrading" to Windows 10? Is there really a solution to those problems, or are you suggesting, do not upgrade, FredMcD? Is it possible those problems are just associated with Firefox version 43? I presume the latest version? I would appreciate your or anybody else's follow up. Thank you.
All I can say is to watch questions about Win 10. You can also check out; https://support.microsoft.com
As an experiment, I installed Windows 10 on a 6-year-old laptop and it is even more painfully slow than it was before. Luckily I only break that one out for testing or to dig up old photos. I suggest reserving the upgrade for a newer system with high specifications.
But where are you getting this message? If it is inside Firefox itself, it may be from a Microsoft page. Can you avoid that page?
Thank you for your reply jscher. How can I tell if my 3 year old computer has enough as you put it "higher specifications" to be compatible with Windows 10? I got the message about possible problems with 10 on this Firefox forum from contributor FredMcD, not from Microsoft. That being said, I have also heard, that eventually everyone will have to which from 7 to 10 regardless in due time. Is this the same info you have jscher? Bottom line, what does the Firefox forum and Firefox associates recommend about Windows 10? Your comment about your old computer got slower, is not very encouraging!!! But, if the Microsoft forum is correct in stating eventually everyone will have to change, what choice is there really? Thank you for your help.
Hi sciencemagic, at some point, updates for Windows 7 will stop. I don't know whether you ever used Windows 8 or 8.1; Windows 10 is an improvement on those versions, but I plan to stick with Windows 7 on my current computer until the updates stop.
jscher,
Thank you for your reply. So, evidently you plan on staying with your Windows 7 for as long as possible, and not upgrading to 10. That being said, I got the impression from the Microsoft help forums that Windows 7 will be no longer be supported after some time in 2016? If so, it would seem we all will have to use 10? My concern is, and I'm sure you may have an opinion, is that Microsoft will make Windows 7 run slower, just so people do upgrade to 10 and get away from 7. What is your opinion on that scenario jscher? Can you tell me how much my Firefox browser screens and layouts will change when and if I change to Windows 10? In other words, from my passive knowledge and being somewhat computer illiterate, how much will it change if any? Thank you, jscher.
Hi sciencemagic, Firefox has some visual differences in Windows 10 to better blend with the new "flatter" interface style. But you still should have access to the same Firefox buttons and menus even though they look a bit different.
I suspect Windows 10 will be updated and ready for me by the time Microsoft ends support for Windows 7. But it's not my decision was OS we run on company computers...
jscher, glad to hear frankly Firefox won't change its operating procedures much with Windows 10. From what you describe, it is probably best to wait until Microsoft makes the Windows 7 user make the change, screaming and kicking the whole way to Windows 10, and then make the change. I guess what you are explaining jscher, is wait until the bugs are finally worked out, then make the change. And, that's fine with me. Again, thank you for your help and understanding.
Hi jscher, just how much impact does Windows have on the operation and performance of the browser Firefox? If I were to wait for some time to make the change, if in fact I make the change at all, I would like to know just what the operating system program has on a browser's performance? Thank you. jscher 2000.
Firefox uses features of the operating system to access the internet, just as other applications do. But I don't know how Windows 7 and Windows 10 compare on that front.
jscher, thank you for your reply. You mentioned in an earlier response "suggest reserving the upgrade for a newer system with high specifications" Do you know what computer specifications are best compatible with Windows 10, jscher? I can then look at my computer specifications, and see how they may compare. Thank you.
Sorry, I just know that my old system runs at over 95% disk utilization (in Task Manager) with Windows 10, which makes everything terribly slow. Maybe I should buy it an SSD for Christmas? But seriously, I haven't done extensive research and you'll find a lot more Windows 10 experience on sites like Windows Secrets and Tom's Hardware.
jscher, I will check out your Windows recommendation info sites. Again, thank you.
I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 late last year. The pros for me were that it had taken forever to open any programmes from the very first day I acquired my HP all-in-one about five years ago. After the upgrade it has been so much faster. However the problems I do have, and which I have been able to resolve after searching for help on the Microsoft site - and more often the help has come from other sites, are problems that keep reoccurring. One which is apparently very common is that files won't open, documents for example disappear. Icons do not show on task bar or desktop. It takes some time consuming steps to get everything going again. I am still pleased that I did upgrade. But if you aren't having any problems with Windows 7, then I would say stick with it.
I actually came across this thread searching for answers to another problem I have only just noticed. I can no longer minimize the window when using Firefox. The new Microsoft browser Edge will minimize but I do not like using Edge. I prefer Firefox. I haven't been able to find any solutions to this. Perhaps it has nothing to do with the Windows 10 upgrade and more to do with the latest version of Firefox (44.0.2).
Hi marti1211, I see you posted in a different thread:
But have just accidentally found a fix for my issue. I reduced the screen size manually by dragging the corners. Lo and behold, now the minimize, maximize windows are working!!!!
Yes jscher2000, hadn't got around to mentioning it here yet.
Hi jscher, it seems yourself and marti are advocating staying with Windows 7 until Windows 10 is thoroughly updated. Do you still feel that way jscher? Thank you.
