Easy access to Message Source

Hello,

from Windows Live Mail I was used to be able to view the message source fairly easy by right-clicking the message -> properties -> view source. This is convenient because the mouse follows flawlessly a path from the email to the very options.

In Thunderbird I find that I have to select the email, move the curser away to the menu button (the 3 bars), continue to View -> Message Source. Not only do I have to move away, but since it is all context-menus it means that if I click by accident then the menu will close, probably the email will get deselected and I have to start all over again.

Compared to Windows Live Mail (and Outlook) right-click context menu has the advantage that I just click the email that I want a single(!) time, select one(!) option from the menu. This opens a new dialog (which stays open, even if I click by accident!). So this is much more convenient.

Is there an option to maybe manually modify the right-click context menu? I know there's the hotkey Ctrl+U, but sometimes this is also annoying. Maybe it's not readily accessible.

I know this all might appear fussy, but I believe that even such small details have great impact on the ease of working (and if you google around similar topics, I am by far not the only one!).

So please, hopefully somebody has an idea what I could do. I think I would even go the way to compile Thunderbird completely, just to get this feature back.

I don't want to sound rude, but if you had read my posts you would know that I don't have the problem of opening message source at all (1. Hamburger Menu, 2. Add custom button, 3. Menu Wizard add-on). It is rather that I am not comfortable with the options given. And your last work-around couldn't be any more complicated...

EDIT: Ok, I figured out how to adapt the extension from the mozillazine-thread and made my own extension. It's not perfectly nice (also shows the menu item in the AddOns-context-menu), but I can live with it like that.

I can't imagine anything easier than ctrl+u, but you have dismissed that option.

Perhaps you should investigate one of the tools for user-created buttons and make your own button which fires off ctrl+u.

Yes.

Install the Custom Buttons add-on.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/custom-buttons/

Create a new button. Add the code:

goDoCommand("cmd_viewPageSource")

I wonder why you want such ready access to message source?

You don't have to use the hamburger menu either. A traditional menu is also available.

<alt>+v, Toolbars, tick the checkboxes.

Hi Zenos,

Thank you for your fast answers. For the reasons, sometimes I don't trust emails and want to check if they are malicious before opening them. Or I want to verify the sender.

For not using Ctrl+U, the reason is that first I tend to forget them, and second I sometimes only use the mouse. In other cases I do use hotkeys sometimes, i.e. Ctrl+C/V, but at the sime time I feel annoyed when a program limits me to either mouse OR keyboard.

I checked your option with the customized buttons, but aggain it "disrupts" the logical movement of the mouse (i.e. there's a gap between selecting the email and pressing the button, I'll simply call it a design flaw at this moment).

But I found something else: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=39561 This guy was trying the exact same thing the way I want it. But it's from 2003 and the file layout changed, so I tried but cannot find the correct files to edit.

I also found this extension, which is more what I want: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/s3menu-wizard/?src=cb-dl-updated With this, I can add the menu item. Unfortunately, there 2 (though only minor annoying ;) ) things left: 1. Menu Wizard presents itself always as the last option in the context menu. No way to disable that item. 2. My custom entry will now show EVERYWHERE in the main pane. So if I open addons and right-click anywhere, it will show my option in the context menu.

Any ideas how to achieve the solution from 2003 in 2016? I already unpacked chrome.jar, and looked through a couple of files, but I have not found anything pointing towrads it.

I open the email and use 'More' > 'View source'. This is much quicker than via the menu icon.

The point is not to open it beforehand.

A work around:

  • right click the new msg. - and choose save as.
  • SAve as a text file.
  • open the saved msg with a simple text-editor.
