Had to uninstall and reinstall Firefox 49.0.2. Now on the bookmarks toolbar the primary folders all contain bookmarks but the subfolders under each primary folder are all empty. I tried restoring to an earlier date but no luck. I have a backup PC with the same bookmark structure so I copied the bookmarks from the backup PC and tried to install them via "import bookmarks from HTML" but when I click on the file to be imported the window closes and the Library window crashes. All the primary folders and their subfolders work fine on my backup PC.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Now check your bookmarks. Is the problem still there?

Places Maintenance {web link} Allows to run Maintenance tasks on the database that drives Places, the bookmarks and history module behind Firefox.

Open the Add-ons Manager. Locate the add-on and press the Options button. Then follow the directions.

To open the Bookmarks Manager, press the Alt or F10 key bring up the tool bar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

From here you can access and move the bookmarks to where you want. Once you have everything set up, create a backup for safety.
