Somehow a website I was on ended up as an icon at bottom of my screen which I can't get rid of. How do I do this?

I was on a website for a university. When I was finished I closed the website in the usual way, by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the screen. The site appeared to close, but immediately an icon appeared at the bottom of my screen. It is located in the lower left side of the screen, right next to the icon for Foxfire Web Browser. I cannot get rid of this icon for the university. The same icon appears in the lower right side of my screen, right next to the day and date. When I click on it a wide, cream-colored band appears with 6 lines of letters and numbers. I don't know what this is.
