since the automatic Thunderbird update yesterday, nothing works properly. - Inbox keeps on turning & messages do not show - sending a message: gives error (see screenshot below) and although sent, not being showed in sent box either

please indicate the steps to take (step by step, I am not a technical user :-)) in order to solve problem.

thank you! Inge

Obvious the newest beta has compatibility issues with one or more add-ons I have, may be your problem too. I could open the Help tab, and restarted i safe mode.

Many thanks, lepiane, did not really help solve the issue at my side. Am trying to find out which steps to make a safe back up and reinstall the whole thing. Is there an active support for thunderbird or is this a fasing out application?.. greetings, inge

I'll just move away from thunderbird and look for a working solution. lost the entire day with trying to get it going

When Thunderbird stops working after an update, it may be that security software is blocking the new version, since it thinks it is dealing with something new. Check your new Thunderbird is specifically permitted through your firewall.

Why do you think the error message shows a server name that looks like your email address instead of the actual incoming IMAP server address? Have or modified these settings?

If starting Thunderbird in Safe Mode didn’t help and hence no add-on is responsible, check the server name for incoming mail, as well as its authentication method as indicated by the message.

Copying your profile folder could be done by opening Help > Troubleshooting Information and clicking Open Folder, exiting Thunderbird, go up one folder in the opened file browser and copy that folder elsewhere. However, a wrong setting will be copied too, but creating a backup is good anyway.

Reinstalling Thunderbird will most likely not help (because the bits and bytes for the program itself should be installed OK unless you suffer harddisk issues, and so should any registry items) but can do no harm. If the problem persists for some reason, you may be better off uninstalling Thunderbird 52.3.0 (you won’t lose email and settings) and reinstalling the previous 52.2.1 version. The Options > Advanced panel > Update tab should provide the history of the actual versions used previously.

Ah, well spotted, Tonnes. So it's not likely to be a security software problem.

I should add that in my case I went back and downloaded the prior release Dir 55.0b2/ > then > Dir win32/ > then > Dir en-US/ > then > File Thunderbird Setup 55.0b2.exe 29M 14-Jul-2017 14:18 ... Which I saved and opened and everything was back to normal. All my add-ons look good, no emails lost, all folders in place.
