Outgoing server is being altered by Thunderbird
I have 5 email accounts set up in Thunderbird; 4 accounts are at the same email provider. Two of my email account names are similar ("wayne" and "waynec") and are at the same email provider.
I just noticed that the outgoing server for each of those similar names (outgoing servers entered as "wayne@jagsnvettes.com" and "waynec@jagsnvettes.com", respectively) are being automatically altered by Thunderbird in the Account Settings Outgoing Server (SMTP) to be the same server:
"wayne@jagsnvettes.com - smtppro.zoho.com (default)".
The outgoing servers for the two other email accounts at that same provider remain as I coded them.
Not a serious problem, as it appears the messages are sent regardless, and the outgoing server could probably be the same for ALL my email accounts, but if I code them all differently, why would Thunderbird make that change for only one account?

(note: as I said above, I think my confusion was that both accounts pointed at a default server when I thought I had coded each account to use a unique server)
That is exactly what I was trying to say. But it goes further.
In the folder pane you will have your accounts and inboxes. If you are in the account folders there, then that account will be selected to send mail. If you are in say the unified inbox folder and there is no explicitly selected account then the default will be selected if you click write. As a general rule replies should reply using the SMTP for the identity the mail came into.
Next bit. The information you see in account settings when you click the account name is the "default identity" for the account. An account can have multiple identities configured. (manage identities button) This is handy if say you have a gmail account picking up mail from the ISP account. You can configure an ISP identity for mail in the gmail account from the ISP account so replied look like they come from the ISP and in fact use the ISP outgoing server.

Are the incoming accounts showing the correct outgoing server. Click the name in the account setting list and check, It is this link to the "Identity" that allows the outgoing server to be selected, and then only if you are replying, or your are in the "account" in the folder pane. Otherwise the default is selected.
Matt, I'm not certain exactly what you are asking... but, I may have gotten it to work properly now, although I'm not sure what I did to make that happen. I think it may have been that I had both accounts pointed to a default server and when I clicked on "Edit SMTP server..." I was altering the default server's name when I thought I was altering the unique server name for one of the two accounts.
This is what I thought I was seeing previously (probably another "old guy" problem)......
I initially coded the email accounts like this:
the wayne acct shows acct name wayne@jagsnvettes.com with
- incoming server name imappro.zoho.com port 993 user name wayne@jagsnvettes.com SSL/TLS normal password - outgoing server wayne@jagsnvettes.com, smtppro.zoho.com, which in turn is coded as wayne@jagsnvettes.com smtppro.zoho.com 465 SSL/TLS normal password wayne@jagsnvettes.com
the waynec acct is coded as acct name waynec@jagsnvettes.com with
- incoming server name imappro.zoho.com port 993 user name waynec@jagsnvettes.com SSL/TLS normal password - outgoing server is coded: waynec@jagsnvettes.com smtppro.zoho.com 465 SSL/TLS normal password waynec@jagsnvettes.com
But, when I try to send an email from waynec to wayne, I get an error saying "The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtppro.zoho.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again." ...and, the outgoing server coding in Thunderbird for Wayne has been altered by Thunderbird to waynec@jagsnvettes.com (which it says is the default server)... sometimes I also have to enter the account password (depending on whether I'm sending a test email from wayne to waynec. or vice-versa). If I had sent the first email from wayne to waynec, the same sort of thing happens except the alterations in the waynec acct now point to the "wayne" outgoing server).
I realize it works just fine if I keep the server alterations Thunderbird makes, but it just doesn't seem like it should be making alterations to the server, and it confuses the hell out of me.
