How do I stop word documents from automatically downloading?

When I click word document links they automatically download to my computer. Other file types such as excel spreadsheets give me a pop-up asking me to "open this file" or download the file. There is no option in Tools>Options to stop this; only change where it downloads on my computer. I want to open these word documents instead of having to always save them.
