Why does my Firefox icon keep disappearing from my apple dock?

Recently the Icon I placed in the dock of my mac keeps disappearing. Sometimes its there for a little while and sometimes its gone as soon as the dock is hidden. Its happenes on my desktop and on my laptop. When it disappears, to re-open Firefox I have to go to applications to access it as opposed to the dock (annoying) Whats going on?
