Periodically Firefox gives me a popup with a ? and text:

Clicking on either generates one of two responses: 1. The popup goes away for a while, or 2. The popup goes away then comes right back.
At other times FF freezes for a short while: keys to move up or down the page don't work. I don't know if there's a connection.
I had this problem in Fedora 16-64 and it's still here in F17-64 to which I just upgraded. F17 is a fresh install which includes Firefox. However, I renamed the old default folder as the new one in the profile.ini so I assume it's somewhere in the default folder.
There's no file with that name in the default folder so I have no idea where to look. Nor do I know what to do to eliminate the problem.
It would be nice not to have this issue.

That is a file that is used on web pages to perform specific JavaScript functions.
It may be a problem with the website or a problem in Firefox with the JavaScript used on those pages.
Extensions that interfere with JavaScript on web pages can also add to such issues.
If it happens reproducibly on certain websites then you can try to check it with a new and unmodified profile to see if it still happens.
You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

I have the renamed, unused profile folder from the FF that came with the Fedora v.17-64. I renamed the one I had from before to match the new profile.ini

My thought is that all I really want is my bookmarks. There is an automatic daily bookmarks backup. It would seem all I need to do is save that from the current folder, paste it into the new backup folder and then import it to active status. How likely is the problem to be in the bookmarks folder?

You should avoid renaming a profile folder on disk, but instead edit the profiles.ini file to reflect that name or use the Profile Manager to rename the profile as seen in there.

I have used both methods with no apparent problems:
I changed the name in the profiles.ini when I started to use Fedora, the folders being from FF and TB in Win XP.
I started with Fedora 15-32 then upgraded, 16-32 to 16-64 and now 17-64. In all of these I use the Gnome desktop. Each version of Fedora comes with FF which in turn has a minimal default folder. I changed the name of the old default folder to match the one in profiles.ini for the upgrades. I just add 1 to the new folder name.
What would be a problem doing it one way but not the other? This problem didn't start until I'd been in 16-64 for a while.
Since I swapped default folders immediately there's nothing in the new bookmarks backup folder.
It doesn't seem likely that the bookmarks might be part of the problem, so... The current default folder has a bookmarks backup folder which is updated daily. Each update file is about 1.3 MB; is there some reason I can't copy the latest one into the FF default folder/bookmarks backup folder that came with Fedora 17-64? Then all I have to do is import that file into active use, right? I must admit I've never done that, but there should be directions at FF support, eh?
Addons and plugins in the fresh folder should be minimal as well and can be disabled/deleted/replaced if necessary.
What do you see as possible problems in attempting this? I have to admit I'm new to dealing with mixed OS/app issues.
In the default folder I found some folders to be empty and some file titles indicate sw I won't be adding. I read somewhere that a number of files and folders can be deleted and will be added back automatically if needed. Where can I find a list of those?
