Hello, Every time I open a new tab whilst my computer is busy I see a speed dial page briefly which then quickly reverts to homepage. All I want is the speed dial to load up as my deafalt home page and for every new tab I open. Most help refers to needing a plugin for this but a) I can see the speeddial occasionally and looks functional b) it must be built in as I have no speeddial plug ins c) downloading a plugin is not adequate as the speeddial I see works with my walnut theme very well and I dont need the additional features. How do I set the inbuilt speed dial to open as deafalt?

Many thanks

Hi,

You can try to set the home Page to about:newtab in Firefox Tools (Alt + T) > Options > General.

Options

For the new tab page please try setting browser.newtab.url to about:newtab in about:config.

  1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
  2. Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.

about:config Entries

The Config Descriptions add-on adds helpful source comments in about:config.

If problems persist you can reset Firefox and start afresh.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

See also this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

Try to reset some preferences to the default with the SearchReset extension:

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

Between your two responses I now have it resolved, needed to put about:newtab in normal homepage options but that didnt quite solve it.

After opening in safe mode, it worked, so you were right, it was an add-on interfering, thankfully it was either something called relevantknowledge or a utorrent community bar, both of which weren't downloaded by choice so Im glad to see them go. Sorted.
