When visiting "medicare.gov/find-a-plan" I get a popup "TypeError: $(...). jcarousel is not a function". I am using Windows 7.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

I'm having the exact same error at Medicare.gov/find-a-plan -- "TypeError: $(...). jcarousel is not a function".

I restarted Firefox in Safe Mode and that didn't help. Like jdss, I also have Java 7, Update 21. I've tried disabling certain add-ons, restarting Firefox with all add-ons disabled, and have uninstalled and reinstalled Java, and nothing is fixing the problem. It's driving me nuts because I never used to have this problem at Medicare.gov.

To avoid confusion:


This page seems to generate a lot of errors (mostly CSS errors), but I'm not seeing one about jcarousel.

Clear the cache and the cookies from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Thanks for your quick response. I forgot to mention that I have Windows 8 on a new Dell desktop that I bought last December.

I did what you suggested: cleared the cache and removed all cookies, then closed Firefox and reopened it and I still have the problem. I've attached screen shots. The 1st pic from last night (5/25/13) is from the "find-a-plan" page and above and below the normal looking "Personalized Search" section, the screen shot doesn't show that the rest of the page is an unformatted mess. The 2nd pic from today (5/26/13) is Medicare.gov's Home page and it's completely unformatted.

But it's not just a Firefox problem. The 3rd screen shot attached (also from today, 5/26/13) shows a normal Home page in IE 10, but when I click the link "Find Health & Drug Plans", I get the unformatted gibberish with the message "TypeError: Object doesn't support property or method jcarousel".

Same thing in Chrome. I get a good Home page but gibberish with a slightly different error message: "Type Error: [object Object] has no method 'jcarousel'".

I also downloaded Opera to see what happens with that browser and the exact same problems but with a slightly different error message, this time mentioning JavaScript (4th screen shot). I was going to download Safari to try it, but Apple is no longer making it available to Windows users.

I'm not a programmer so I don't know what CSS errors and "jcarousel" mean, but you are right -- this page generates a lot of errors and I'm not the only person having this problem. A few months ago I accessed Medicare.gov and "Find Health & Drug Plans" several times and I didn't have any problems at all. It looks like I'll have to call Medicare and bring this to their attention. I hope I don't reach some bureaucrat who will try to tell me it's a problem with my computer, but that's highly unlikely since other folks are having problems at Medicare.gov and this is the only website that is giving me trouble.

If you have any other suggestions, thanks in advance! Sorry to be so long-winded about this.

Yes, I do not have any problems.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make a note of those passwords and bookmarks.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the affected files.

It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
