blank bar on right side of screen with Yahoo mail

more options

Ever since Yahoo changed their email pages and forced those of us who preferred Yahoo Mail Classic into the new & UNIMPROVED Yahoo Mail, I have this annoying blank band on the right side of the screen from top to bottom. I contacted Yahoo Mail and they said it is a browser problem. I have tried to get rid of it, but I cannot. Any suggestions how to get back to full screen viewing on my Yahoo Mail pages?

I've attached a screen shot where it shows the offending blank area that is wasted on the right side of the screen. I have to use the side to side arrows to read the full width of some emails.

Edit....I cannot find where to add an attachment of the screen shot. Anyone help with that?

Well, if you didn't block ads, you would see an attractive display ad in that blank area. :-)

But seriously, as long as you have a free account and aren't interested in paying to remove graphical ads ("Mail Plus"), you could consider using another add-on to expand the content to fill the blank space. Check out the one mentioned in this post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/966272?page=2#answer-479502

The forum software detected your Firefox as version 21. Is that correct?

Version 21 is not secure; Mozilla discloses security flaws after each new release. Is something holding you back from upgrading to Firefox 24? Please let us know so we can suggest solutions or workarounds.

If Help > About Firefox shows Firefox 24.0, you may need to clear the preference that is misreporting your version number. See: How to reset the default user agent on Firefox.

Yes, I do have 21. I just checked "about Firefox." Why have i not updated....I dunno???

I do have ABP so ads are blocked. The thing that is strange is my brother uses Firefox also on a desktop and his free Yahoo mail does not have this bar on the side. He has full screen width. This issue only started after Yahoo Mail changed their Mail accounts in July 2013. Thank you in advance for any and all advice.

I don't have any experience with AdBlock Plus. There might be ways to fine-tune it for Yahoo mail. But see the link in my first reply for a workaround.

I have now updated to FF24, but the problem still persists. I think it may be a setting of some sort because my brother's Yahoo mail on his PC does not have this blank bar on the right side. Anyone?

Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

  • View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl+0 (zero); Command+0 on Mac)

If you have made changes to Advanced font settings like increasing the minimum/default font size then try the default minimum setting "none" and the default font size 16 in case the current setting is causing problems.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

Hi mattt, your brother might have an extension that better removes the advertisement, but as far as I know there's no built-in setting that could do it.
