Many medical conditions limit manual dexterity. I’ve had essential tremor since childhood; it’s harmless, but it does complicate the business of using a smart phone. Some applications (e.g., Proton Mail) have settings for the user to choose what happens upon swiping left or right; I set them to “do nothing” or to the most harmless of the actions listed. I don’t see such a setting in the Android version of Firefox.

It would be useful, because I usually keep many tabs open, which means that when I look at the grid of tabs, I need to scroll up and down to see them all. However, moving my finger straight up or down is difficult: any trembling while I move up or down seems to be interpreted as swiping sideways, and then a tab closes. I can find and re-open tabs using the “Recently closed tabs” menu, but I’d rather tabs not close so easily because I don’t always notice when I lose them.

There’s a somewhat similar, archived comment at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1419070, but the setting referred to in one of the proposed solutions is about swiping on the address bar (I turned that off long ago), not in the grid of tabs. And I don’t see a way to disable left- and right-swiping for all applications at once in the Settings app of Android 12, with which I’ll be stuck for a while.
