Incoming messages only appear after I send an email and will not appear if I "Get Mail".

My mom is having trouble with her email account. She has a very slow dial up connection. She only gets incoming emails when she sends an outgoing email. I live in a different country than her and she is 80 years old so hopefully its a simple fix. Thank you so much. Anne Broomer

First get mail only applies to the current account. use the little down arrow to display the menu and select "get all new message" implied but not stated it is for all accounts.

If she has a very slow connection it may be that Thunderbird goes offline Bottom left corner of the screen are two blue monitor images. Clinking them toggles the online offline state.

If sending mail gets mail it may well be offline and the send triggers an online state. (Although that should have a go online dialog, but lots gets lost in translation, especially from the technically challenged, which I assume your mum is. Mine was)
